It is based on the concept of higher sensitivity of adipocytes to cold in comparison with other water-rich cells. The number of independent clinical research studies backing the procedure is still relatively small. Zeltiq Aesthetics creators of CoolSculpting®, report their cryolipolysis device lowers the amount of fat cells in the treatment area by between 20 and 25%. In addition, the small number of research studies focused on fat cell destruction did not study adverse effects such as post treatment texture or post treatment patch ridges.
The cooling of the treatment area is done by cup-shaped applicators with two cooling panels. The treatment is set up with a vacuum action that pulls the tissue and draws the target zone between the cooling panels. The constriction of blood vessels accelerates the cooling process. The cryolipolysis device freezes fat cells under the skin and once the fat cells have been destroyed, they are gradually broken down and removed from the body by the liver. The treatment session usually takes 40 minutes to one hour.
